A guide to Your equine Black background session, all in one place
I’m so excited that you have chosen me to help showcase your horse! Together, we’ll create beautiful images of your equine partner that you’ll cherish for years to come. To prepare for your upcoming session, check out this guide with information on prepping both you and your horse!
The Experience
Black background, or Fine Art, sessions are some of my favorite sessions to shoot! They are super low-key with minimal setup. Every horse brings their own flair, and capturing their personality is what makes these sessions so fun.
For these sessions, we will shoot at the open end of a barn aisleway to make the best use of available natural light. The other end of the aisle should be enclosed with lights turned off. This makes it possible for your horse to seamlessly blend into the background when I begin editing.
If it is raining or if we choose to shoot in a location where natural light is unavailable, I will bring my lighting setup - a group of strobe lights that create beautiful highlights and shading on your horse. We will do a brief acclimation process with your horse to make sure that the flashes are no big deal.
Equine attire is totally up to you! Leather halters or bridles are perfect, elegant choices for these sessions. If you prefer the ‘naked’ or unbridled look, we will use a photography halter that has very minimal coverage of the face, which allows for control of your horse as well as seamless removal during editing.
After your session, I will begin the editing process. This includes everything from retouching lighting to fixing ears and removing halters, as well as creating that classic black background look. Ensuring that every image is one that you will adore can be a fairly time consuming process, so expect to receive your photos 2-3 weeks after your session.
Once your images are finished, I will upload them into an online gallery for you to view and download! Digital versions of your images are included with your session — these are perfect for posting on social media or sharing with family and friends.
Black background portraits look stunning on display — they are so timeless and elegant, and besides, us horse people can’t get tired of looking at our equine pals, right? If you are interested in physical prints, I offer a wide range of sizes and finishes. Whether you prefer the canvas wraps or metal prints that are all the rage or the classic paper prints that look beautiful in a frame, I’ve got you covered. Your gallery will have a shop built in for you to preview your photos as prints, and as always, I’m happy to chat through which option might be the best for you!
Prepping FOR YOUR SESSION
Here is quick rundown of things I like to do to prepare my own horses for fine art sessions!
1 Week Before
• body clipping (if desired!) - this allows ample time for any clip marks to even out
2-3 Days Before
• prep any tack you would like to use
• make sure your horse gets plenty of turnout and exercise leading up to your session — this usually gives us alert but settled horses who are game for lots of posing!
Day of Your Session
• Make sure to groom your horse before yourself if you plan to be in any photos!
• Fed horses are happy horses, so if we plan to shoot near feed time, plan to give their feed before our session.
•Hoof polish! Shiny hooves always look stunning!!
•Final tack prep
•Sweep and clear aisleway of any dirt/debris or clutter like pitchforks, buckets, etc.
•It’s go time!!
